Any compression method in which the file size reduction is achieved by reprocessing the data for more compact storage, without permanently eliminating any needed data. The file can be decompressed back to its original condition. See also compression, lossy compression.#
Any compression method in which some or all of the size reduction is achieved by eliminating data from the file. The compressed file cannot be decompressed to match the original exactly. The amount of data lost in lossy compression is variable, and may or may not noticeably affect quality. See also compression, lossless compression.#
(Graphics) Luminance is the black and white component of the video signal. The amount of luminance contained in a video signal is directly related to the amount of light intensity. The human eye views this as brightness. Luminance also plays a part in color signals. In the absence of luminance, color signals are black.#
